The Liquorice Rug was designed by Diane West and Margaret Kenny and was worked by members of the West Riding Ruggers including Linda Francis and Jean Schroderus.

They even dyed some pieces of cloth so that the liquorice plant leaves and flowers were the right colour. (The black is made from pieces of women’s tights!)

The theme is based on sweet packaging in the museum collections. “Willie Wilko” (Wilkinsons) on the left is followed by two versions of “Bertie Bassett.” The Little Lord Fauntleroy figure with top hat and pinstriped trousers is from Hillabys - he has a large Pontefract cake across his chest.

The motorbikes were cardboard cut-outs to sell two Wilkinsons sweets on the wheels. The designer, now in his 90s, tells us he also drew a car with two sweets as wheels.

The rug was commissioned so that it could be displayed annually for the Pontefract Liquorice Fair in July.
