Housed in an attractive art nouveau building, the museum traces the history of Pontefract castle and borough up to the present.

In the middle ages, Pontefract was the military and political centre of West Yorkshire. The castle history is traced from Norman fort to royal palace. Richard II died there and Shakespeare called it "Bloody Pomfret" in his plays. After the Civil War, the displays turn to the town with the race course, the barracks, the secret ballot, liquorice and much more.
