The invaluable but rarely seen Gott Collection was presented to Wakefield Art Gallery by the local industrialist and collector Frank Green in 1930. John Gott (1830-1906) Vicar of Leeds and later Bishop of Truro, and his father William (1797-1863) a wool merchant compiled the bound 10 volume collection in the 19th century. It includes over 1,200 prints, watercolours, sketches, maps and plans illustrative (some very rare) of the topography and architecture of Yorkshire between the 18th and 19th centuries. It is probably the finest collections of its type, with images of over 200 Yorkshire villages, towns and cities included within the 10 volumes. Also many of the buildings, architectural remains and landscapes represented are no longer in existence. All the plates are fine impressions and include works by topographers such as Buck, Drake, Halfpenny, Kip, Malton and Vertue. The collection also contains original sketches and watercolours not only by John Coney but also by William Dade, Samuel Hieronymus Grimm and others. |
